Presenter: Pastor Megan Madsen
Pastor Megan led a Lenten study group prior to Easter that many members of our congregation were unable to attend. She is going to summarize her presentations in that group in our adult education session this week. Here is what she says about the topic:
“I will be presenting a synopsis of the Seedbed class I led on the book ‘Queering Wesley, Queering the Church’ by Keegan Osinski. The book explores the relationship between Wesleyan theology and the celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Church. In this class, we will look at John Wesley’s theology framework and challenge ourselves to draw wider circles.”
John Wesley was a priest in the Church of England. He was born in 1703, the 15th child in his family, only half reached adulthood. He attended Oxford University and was ordained as a priest when he was 48 years old. He traveled all over Britain and even came to the colony of Georgia for a brief period. He traveled by foot and horseback, preaching along the way. He and his brother Charles began a movement which they called Methodism. Covenant United Methodist Church, our church, is in the legacy of that movement.
Pastor Megan is going to help us understand how Wesley’s understanding of the message of Jesus was not exclusive. As you know, having attended the morning worship and hearing Pastor Megan speak, she is demonstrating every week that the teaching of the Gospel is not exclusive. Join us to learn more about our history as a denomination and our human tendency toward tribalism.
The class will begin on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. in person in rooms 13 and 14 or on Zoom. The Zoom link is ID: 976 0612 3777. There is no passcode. Just put in the ID.
